Günther Andergassen

Günther Andergassen (born April 17, 1930 in Margreid , South Tyrol ; † January 19, 2016 in Innsbruck ) was a Tyrolean composer and an explosives terrorist convicted as a member of the South Tyrol Liberation Committee (BAS).

Life

Adolescent years and academic career

The only son of the goldsmith Alois Andergassen and his wife Franziska grew up in Bolzano . In 1940, as part of the option , the parents first emigrated to Wels , but later moved to Innsbruck . At the age of 12, Andergassen began to learn the clarinet and became interested in the twelve-tone technique at an early age. At the age of 19, Andergassen took over the management of a newly founded church choir. He studied Romance languages, English, art history and musicology at the University of Innsbruck . In 1955 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on Giacomo Puccini . He then studied music education (with Eberhard Preußner) and composition (with Cesar Bresgen ) in Salzburg from 1956 to 1958 . After several months of Rome scholarship, Andergassen taught (1958–1971) at the Mozarteum Music Academy in Salzburg, and from 1961 also at the Innsbruck Conservatory.

Explosives bombings in South Tyrol

Shaped by the childhood experience of fascist Italianization in South Tyrol, Andergassen got involved in the 1960s as a member of the South Tyrol Liberation Committee for the reintegration of South Tyrol into Austria. Andergassen was involved in the smuggling of explosives for attacks on electricity pylons in South Tyrol. In 1964 he was arrested by the Italian authorities and sentenced in Milan. From a 30-year prison sentence, he served seven years in Italian prisons.

After his release, Andergassen returned to his educational and composing activities in the early 1970s. He became director of the chamber choir of the Innsbruck Conservatory . From 1990 to 1995 he was director of the Feldkirch Conservatory . Andergassen wrote primarily vocal compositions, especially for choral singing, and tried to combine cantability and twelve-tone technique.
