Graun im Vinschgau ( Italian Curon Venosta ) is an Italian municipality with 2386 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol at the triangle Italy - Austria - Switzerland .
geography
Graun im Vinschgau is with 210.06 km² the fourth largest municipality in South Tyrol. It is located in the Vinschger Oberland in the extreme north-west of the province on the border with Austria and Switzerland or the state of Tyrol and the canton of Graubünden . The three largest villages in the municipality - St. Valentin on the Haide ( 1472 m ), the eponymous administrative seat Graun ( 1520 m ) and Reschen am See ( 1525 m ) - are located in the uppermost section of the Adige Valley south of the Reschen Pass ( 1507 m ). At the Reschenpass, a transition of the main Alpine ridge , the Etsch rises , which flows in a southerly direction and first crosses the Reschensee ( 1498 m ) and then the Haidersee ( 1450 m ). Since the Italian-Austrian border on the Reschenpass is not exactly aligned with the watershed, the municipality also includes areas of the northern pass ramp , which is drained from the Valmiurbach towards the Inn .
The eastern part of the municipality reaches far into the Ötztal Alps , which are divided into Weißkamm , Nauderer Berge and Planeiler Berge . The area of which is divided Vallelunga which the Karlinbach is crossed and the fraction Langtaufers (1500- 1915 m offers) space. The most important peaks surrounding the Langtauferer Tal include the Weißkugel ( 3738 m ), the Langtauferer Spitze ( 3528 m ), the Weißseespitze ( 3498 m ), the Hintere Hintereisspitze ( 3485 m ), the Äußere Bärenbartkogel ( 3473 m ) and the Klopaierspitze ( 2918 m ).
The western part of the municipality includes mountain areas that are assigned to the Sesvenna group. This area is accessed through the Rojental , in which the hamlet Rojen ( 2000 m ) is located. The Piz Lad ( 2808 m ) and the Elferspitze ( 2926 m ) are among the highest Grauner peaks in the Sesvenna group .
Attractions
- The Reschensee is the largest lake in South Tyrol. It is best known for the steeple of the old Graun parish church of St. Katharina, which protrudes from the lake.
- On the Plamort plateau above the Reschenpass there are remains of the fascist Vallo Alpino with bunkers and an anti-tank barrier.

Graun im Vinschgau is the seat of a German-speaking school district . This includes four primary schools in the municipality (in Graun, Langtaufers, Reschen and St. Valentin) and a middle school in St. Valentin . An “adventure school” in Langtaufers is also connected to the Sprengel.

For motor traffic , Graun im Vinschgau is primarily opened up by the SS 40 , which runs through the municipality in a north-south direction and continues in Austria as the B 180 .

Sports
The Schöneben ski area is located in the municipality and also includes the Haideralm ski area , which was independent until 2017. Until 2014 there was also the small Maseben ski area in Langtaufers .

Trivia
- The Kastelruther Spatzen used the church tower in Reschensee as a backdrop for the video for the song Atlantis of the Mountains .
- The location is the setting for the Italian Netflix series Curon , which was released on June 10, 2020. There is a supernatural curse surrounding the bell tower and Lake Reschen.
