The Planeiler Mountains are a mountain group in the Italian province of South Tyrol and form the south-western part of the Ötztal Alps . The area is limited by the Etschtal or the Vinschgau in the west, the Langtaufer valley in the north and the Matscher valley in the south. The yoke between the Outer and Inner Bärenbartkogel separates the Planeiler Mountains from the Weißkamm in the east. The Äußere Bärenbartkogel is also the highest peak in the group at 3473 m . Just to the west of this, two ridges loosen up, which enclose the Planeil valley , a side valley of the Vinschgau, in a horseshoe shape. In the lower, southwestern part of this valley is the eponymous town of Planeil . The smaller Plawennal , which is also enclosed by the Planeiler Mountains, runs parallel to the Planeiltal . The Planeilferner and the Freibrunnerferner in the northeast section are the only glaciers in the mountain range.
Touristic
The Planeiler Mountains are relatively little frequented by hikers and mountaineers. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that there are no refuges in the area of the Planeiler Mountains that could serve as a base. Approaches are therefore long or cumbersome. On the other hand, most of the ridges descend into the valley without any structure, while they quickly lose their high mountain character towards the southwest. Some easily accessible destinations from the Vinschgau such as B. the viewpoint Spitzige Lun ( 2324 m ) above Mals or the Endkopf ( 2652 m ) above Graun are visited more often.
