Planeil ( Italian Planol ) is a fraction of the municipality of Mals in Vinschgau in South Tyrol ( Italy ). Planeil is located at 1599 meters above sea level on the western edge of the Ötztal Alps . The type of settlement is a Rhaeto-Romanic clustered village consisting of mountain farms built closely together. Planeil currently has 166 inhabitants (January 2014) and maintains a mountain school with 5 students (school year 2019/2020). Due to its secluded location in an eastern side valley of the Vinschgau, the Planeiltal , Planeil was able to retain a very original character, although the village center was almost completely destroyed by two major fires in 1985 and 1986. Planeil is little affected by tourism . The Puni flows through the Planeil valley . The local parish church is dedicated to St. Nicholas .
