The Äußere Bärenbartkogel ( Italian Cima Barba d'Orsa di Fuori ) is a 3473 meter high mountain at the northern end of the Planeiler Mountains in the southern Ötztal Alps , located in the Italian province of South Tyrol . The north side of the mountain is covered by snow and ice until just below the summit , the south flank drops ice-free and steeply into the upper Matscher valley . According to the literature, the first known ascent did not take place until September 1909 by Fridolin Hohenleitner and Josef Plattner. The neighboring Weißkugel, on the other hand, was first committed in 1845.

Surroundings

The north-south running chain of the Planeiler Mountains meets the south-west-north-east facing Weißkamm at the Bärenbartjoch . The Outer Bärenbartkogel forms the northernmost summit of this group, while the higher Inner Bärenbartkogel already belongs to the Weißkamm. The Outer Bärenbartkogel is surrounded by glaciers in the west, north and south-east . To the west and north lies the Freibrunner Ferner , with an incline of up to 50 °, and to the southeast, a less inclined firn field of the Matscher Ferners . Neighboring mountains are in the east, separated by the Bärenbartjoch at an altitude of 3292 meters , the 3557 meter high Innere Bärenbartkogel and the Weißkugel at 3739 meters. In the course of the southeast ridge , only the Freibrunnerspitze (3366 m) follows . The closest settlements are Matsch im Matscher Tal in a south-westerly direction and Langtaufers in Langtauferer Tal in a north-westerly direction.

Base and inspection

The Outer Bärenbartkogel is usually approached from the north. The Weißkugelhütte ( Rifugio Pio XI alla Palla Bianca ) at 2544 meters serves as a base . From the hut the path runs as an alpine tour (only to be done with appropriate equipment and experience) in a southerly direction either over the Bärenbartferner or the Freibrunner Ferner to the Bärenbartjoch, then in a westerly direction the firn-covered east ridge leads in places with easy block climbing of difficulty UIAA I , in a total walking time of, according to literature, three to four hours to the summit. Also from the south, from the Matscher valley, the Äußere Bärenbartkogel can be climbed in four hours via the south side. A tour through the south-east flank leads over the Matscher Ferner and in a moderately difficult climb with a difficulty level of UIAA II.

Another variant is the ascent from the Matscher valley to the Bärenbartjoch. Over the sandy moraine at the end of the Matscher valley, it goes over a small gap in the rock face up to the Bärenbartjoch. From there, the entire ridge can be walked up to the Freibrunnerspitze. Sometimes the difficulty level is UIAA III . The way back is via the Matscher Joch.

Surname

The mountain name does not derive from the presence of bearded brown bears . Rather, the part of the name beard can be traced back to an Oberinntal dialect word with the meaning "grove, forest tongue", whereby the beard can be interpreted simply as a bear forest .
