The Weißkugelhütte ( Italian Rifugio Pio XI ) is a refuge in the South Tyrolean part of the Ötztal Alps .
Location and surroundings
The hut is located at the end of the Langtauferer valley high above the Langtauferer Ferner at an altitude of 2544 m slm. There is a small chapel next to the hut.
history
The hut was built in the years 1892-1893 by the Frankfurt am Main section of the DuÖAV and handed over to the Mark Brandenburg section before the First World War . The hut was expropriated in 1919 and was under military administration until 1924; In 1925 it was handed over to the Desio section of the CAI . On the hundredth birthday of Pope Pius XI. it was renamed in 1957 in Rifugio Pio XI alla Palla Bianca .
Together with 24 other shelters expropriated by the state, the Weißkugelhütte became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol in 1999; At the end of 2010, the license for their management by the CAI expired. In 2011 the state government decided to demolish and rebuild the hut due to the poor structural condition. Since 2015, the state of South Tyrol has been supported in the management of the hut (assignment to tenants, supervision of management, renovation measures) by a joint commission, in which the AVS and CAI are represented in addition to the public sector .
ways
Approach
The ascent takes place from Melag in the west on several route variants in around 2½ to 3 hours. The Langtaufers glacier educational trail, established in 2007, leads across the valley floor and then from the east to the hut.
