St. Nicholas in Rojen

Rojen is a hamlet in the South Tyrolean community of Graun im Vinschgau and is located in the valley of the same name. The Rojental is a side valley of the Vinschgau , branches off at the Reschensee from the Etschtal and leads into the Sesvenna group. Rojen is at almost 2000 m and is therefore one of the highest hamlets in the Alps that are inhabited all year round. In the Rojental there are many mountain meadows that are cultivated by the farmers from Reschen in August .

Cultural sights

The Church of St. Nicholas is considered to be the "most precious jewel of this remote valley" and is "unique as a venerable work of art". This is how Josef Rampold described the Gothic church in Rojen (the nave was built in the 13th or 14th century, the choir around 1400) in particular because of the fresco decorations that were completely uncovered and restored in 1967. The entire choir is painted; In addition, in the nave, under a layer of plaster with a Gothic fresco, an older layer with painted mortar figures can be found.

The wall paintings in the choir, according to Josef Weingartner, early 15th century, Meraner Schule, show the birth of Christ, Christ as a child, crucified, risen and judge in the mandorla , flanked by evangelist symbols (human figures with animal heads) and the church fathers Gregorius, Hieronymus , Ambrose and Augustine; Appearance of God the Father before Christ on the Mount of Olives; St. Nicholas and the three virgins , in whose room he throws three gold balls; the saints Georg, Jakob, Oswald and Katharina; Torture of St. Sebastian (fragmented) u. v. a.

The sculptures of Saints Nikolaus, Sebastian and Rochus were stolen from the late baroque altar (1761, Baltasar Horer) in 1976 (replaced by copies by Peter Pircher in 1981).

The church bell dates from 1470.
