Josef Duile (also Giuseppe or Joseph) (born March 19, 1776 in Graun , South Tyrol ; † February 3, 1863 in Innsbruck ) was a technician and pioneer of torrent control .

Life

Josef Duile began his career in 1798 as an intern in Innsbruck. His further path led him as a district engineer to Klausen (1805), as a royal Bavarian road and hydraulic engineering inspector to Bozen (1806) and in 1808 to Rovereto . After Tyrol was returned to Austria, Duile was employed as a district engineer in Bozen. In 1816 he came to Innsbruck as a building director's assistant . Here, between 1820 and 1826, he rose from third to first construction director's adjunct and thus held second place in the hierarchy after the construction director until his retirement in 1843.

Duile founded the torrent control theory and was involved in the expansion of the Brenner and Arlbergstrasse as well as the regulation of the Rhine. The chain bridge at Mühlau near Innsbruck was also built under his direction at the beginning of the 1840s. In addition, he was commissioned by the cantonal government in Glarus in 1841 to develop drafts for the construction of the torrents in this canton . The establishment of the health resort Obladis is also attributed to him.

The book on the construction of torrents in mountainous countries, especially in the province of Tyrol, and Vorarlberg , written by Josef Duile in 1826, is said to have long been one of the best relevant literature.

The Duilestrasse in Innsbruck was named after Josef Duile .
