Gais ( also Gais in Italian ) is a municipality with 3298 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is located in the Tauferer Valley near Bruneck .

The municipality of Gais extends over an area of ​​60.34 km² in the Tauferer Tal and the surrounding mountains. The Tauferer Tal branches off to the north of the Pustertal near Bruneck - Gais' southern neighboring municipality - and the Ahr flows through it. The section belonging to Gais, which borders Sand in Taufers in the north , is almost flat and offers space for two village settlements. The southern of the two villages is the main Gais (830- 850  m slm ) at the foot of Bärentaler Murkegels , northern the fraction Uttenheim (840- 880  m ).

On its west side, the Tauferer Tal is flanked by the south-eastern foothills of the Zillertal Alps . There, a little southwest of Uttenheim on steep slopes, at an altitude of over 1500  m , are the scattered farms of the Lanebach mountain fraction .

In the east, the Rieserferner group borders the Tauferer Tal. At an altitude of approx.  1500  m there are two particularly sun-exposed fractions of the community: on the one hand, Mühlbach on the slopes of the Mühlbach valley, which flows into the Tauferer Tal near the main town , and on the other, Tesselberg, a little south of the municipality border with Percha . Surname

The name "Gais" - first documented in the years 985–993 in the tradition book of the Bressanone Monastery as "Geizes" - designates the main town of the large community formed in 1928 and could be related to the fact that the place lies and means at the feet of a murk as much as "alluvial land". The Tesselberg parliamentary group owes its name to the Bavarian duke Tassilo III.

The community of Gais was formed in 1928 from the previously independent communities of Gais, Uttenheim, Mühlbach and Tesselberg.

In the Middle Ages, today's fractions of Gais belonged to the Uttenheim court, from which various communities emerged in 1811, including the Uttenheim community with the Uttenheim and Gais fractions. The Uttenheim court had its seat in Gais from the 17th century. In 1814 the places became independent communities again. Gais belonged to the judicial district of Taufers until the end of the First World War and was part of the district of Bruneck .

coat of arms

In 1956, the Italian government gave the municipality a coat of arms that had no relation to the place or its history. In 1986 the local council decided to replace it with a new one. The evangelist John , whose symbol is the eagle, was the first church patron of the Gais parish. That is why the new municipal coat of arms contains an eagle in the right half. The bars in the colors blue-gold-blue come from the coat of arms of the former court of Uttenheim.

There are three in the municipality primary schools in the capital Gais, Uttenheim and Mühlbach together the German school district of the neighboring municipality of Brunico I are connected.

The Gaisinger Heimatlied was written on October 3, 1944 by Pastor Anton Hopfgartner. Candidus Weitlaner, a cooperator in Gais from 1943 to 1949, wrote in a preliminary remark about the text of the Heimatlied: Gais is now one of the few happy villages that has its own Heimatlied.
