View of Hafling

Hafling ([ ˈhɑˑflɪŋ ]; Italian : Avelengo ) is an Italian municipality with 780 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol , in the immediate vicinity of Merano . Hafling is the namesake for the Haflinger horses . The skiing and hiking area Merano 2000 is also located in Avelengo.

geography

The municipality of Avelengo is located in the northwest of the Tschögglberg , a mountain range that accompanies the Adige Valley between Merano and Bozen on the east side. The two largest settlements, Hafling Dorf ( 1290  m ) and Oberdorf ( 1400  m ), are located in the lower, mid-mountainous areas of the area in the west of the municipality, which is characterized by forests and meadows. In the northeast, the municipality reaches the summit of the Sarntal Alps : the Verdinser Plattenspitze ( 2680  m ), the Hochplattspitze ( 2615  m ) and the Kleiner Ifinger ( 2552  m ).

Hafling borders on Merano to the west and Schenna to the north . In the south lies the Tschögglberger neighboring municipality Vöran . In the east, the watershed to the Sarntal largely forms the border to the municipality of the same name Sarntal .

history

The name of the settlement is first documented in 1186 as "Haueningen" , in 1189 as "Heveningen" and in 1370 as "Hæfningen" , before the short form prevailed. The name is after the pattern of the Bavarian -ing formed domain name and is expected to OHG. Yard return. Avelengo was part of the historical burgrave office (the narrower domain of the counts of Tyrol ). Until the end of the First World War it belonged to the judicial district of Merano and was part of the district of Merano .

In 1931 Hafling was incorporated into Merano as a fraction by royal decree no. 550 of April 23, 1931 . Only with the regional law no. 7 of May 18, 1957, the place regained its administrative independence.

From 1923 to 1984 Avelengo and Merano- Obermais were connected with the model cable car Merano-Avelengo . Only the former mountain station is preserved.

Attractions

The landmark of Hafling is the 13th century church of St. Kathrein in der Scharte .
