The Morgenkofel ( 3073 m slm , Italian Cima Mattina ) is a summit in the western part of the Rieserferner group . It is located immediately north of the Mühlbacher Jöchl ( 2983 m slm ), a transition between the Mühlbachtal in the southwest and the Gelttal, which flows into the Reintal in the east. While the Morgenkofel seems quite inaccessible from the south and east and shows steep cliffs, the western flank of the mountain is less daunting. From the southwest, from the Mühlbachtal, it appears as a broad ridge dominating the end of the valley.
In the south-east is the Schwarze Wand ( 3105 m slm ), a little more than half a kilometer away , from which the Morgenkofel is separated by the Mühlbacher Jöchl . The next peak in the ridge to the north is the also higher Wasserkopf ( 3135 m slm ). The entire area is protected in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .
Increase opportunities
The easiest ascent leads from the southwest through the Mühlbachtal with the starting point above Mühlbach , a fraction of the municipality of Gais . The ascent route initially runs through the Mühlbachtal past several alpine pastures. At the Oberwanger Alm ( 2027 m ), the path branches off to the east from the ascent path to the Großer Windschar and initially leads steeply over green slopes up into a ground and further towards the Mühlbacher Jöchl. At an altitude of around 2550 m , the route branches off from the ascent path to Mühlbacher Jöchl and initially crosses the western flank of the Morgenkofel in a northerly direction. Later the route leads back east along a ridge up to the summit of the Morgenkofel. The route to the summit of a cross bears marks .
Alternatively, the Morgenkofel can also be reached from the Rieserfernerhütte to the east .
