The Kastelruther Spatzen are a music group from South Tyrol that specializes in popular hits and was founded by Karl Schieder. They are named after their hometown Castelrotto .
The group
The band was founded in 1975 by the musicians Karl Schieder, Walter Mauroner, Valentin Silbernagl, Oswald Sattler , Ferdinand Rier and Anton Rier, who had been singing together for a long time. Anton Rier left the group in 1977. In 1979 Norbert Rier joined the group as a drummer. In 1980 Albin Gross replaced Ferdinand Rier on the harmonica. In this formation, their first record was released in 1983, Much Fun and Joy . This year is officially given as the year of foundation. In 1983 Norbert Rier took over the management of the group. The title The Girl with the Extinguished Eyes became a hit and immediately brought the first gold record .
In 1986 Karl Schieder left for professional reasons. Karl Heufler took his place. In 1993 Oswald Sattler left the group to embark on a solo career. He was replaced by Andreas Fulterer , who also left the group after five years for a solo career. Kurt Dasser joined the group in his place.
Manager Helmut Brossmann announced on May 28, 2014 on the official Facebook page of the Kastelruther Spatzen that he was no longer the manager of the band. For this purpose, Brossmann named the change in the music industry, in particular the folk music & hit industry. Andreas Fulterer died on the night of October 26, 2016.

Kurt Dasser

Rüdiger Hemmelmann
Rüdiger Hemmelmann was born on March 13, 1966 in Würzburg , grew up in Himmelstadt and has been a drummer with the Kastelruther Spatzen since 1991. His position was initially only intended as a "temporary job" for live performances in order to relieve Norbert Rier. However, he fought for this position relatively quickly. Rüdiger Hemmelmann is divorced and has a daughter.
career
After the release of the first CD, which was already gold-plated, a new CD was released almost every year, almost without exception becoming bestsellers. In 1990 the group took part in the Grand Prix of Folk Music for Germany and won with the song Tears don't suit you . Numerous hits and appearances in various television programs throughout the German-speaking area followed. Today the Kastelruther Spatzen already have over a hundred gold records. It is the most successful German-speaking group of popular hits.
The album Heimat - Deine Lieder , released on October 2nd, 2015, includes 20 covered songs. The album contains German-language songs from the group's homeland and well-known works such as Junge komm soon , Bergvagabunden and Elvis Presley's Muss I denn zum Städtele . It is the first work in their entire career to reach first place in the German album charts. In Switzerland the album came in at number 2 and in Austria at number 4.
On September 16, 2016, the group released their 37th album titled The Sun Shines For Everyone , which contains 17 songs. In addition, the DVD of the same name appears with the new songs and personal insights into the life of the Kastelruther Spatzen. The first single, Heimat, was sent to radio stations as early as June 2016 . In the hits of the week on Radio Paloma , the song went straight to number 7.
On August 18, 2017, the Kastel Spatzen gave up their Facebook page announced that the new album Tears of the Dolomites on 29 September [date] 2017 will be released. There will be 16 titles included. The title song Tears of the Dolomites recalls the terrible time of the First World War with the brutal high mountain battles in the Dolomites . All in all, the album is a commitment to humanity, understanding of peoples and peace. The first single was the song Dem Leben laughed in the face , which the group presented for the first time at the summer open air of Wenn die Musipiele .
In addition to the single of the same name, the album Older We Are Later contains 15 other songs. It was released on September 28, 2018 and placed at number 3 in the official German album charts. Overall, it stayed in the top 100 for nine weeks. In Austria the album was also placed at number 3 and in Switzerland at number 5.
The group's new album will be released on October 4, 2019, Feuervogel flieg . It will be the first album to be released under WE LOVE MUSIC, a joint label of Starwatch Entertainment , which belongs to ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE and Universal Music .
Actual musical performance
The actual musical performance of the band is debatable. What is certain is that they play live during live performances (apart from TV playback performances). However, on November 6, 2012 it became known that the Kastelruther Spatzen did not play on their sound carrier recordings themselves, but hired studio musicians, only the singing of Norbert Rier was real. The longtime producer of the band Walter Widemair explained this to the picture . According to the newspaper, Norbert Rier admitted when asked that this was done “to save costs” and “always to deliver perfect production”. The decisive factor here is that a perfect production with professional musicians can be realized faster and thus the greatest cost factor of CD production (studio rental and fees for the supervising technicians) can be limited. "The band's success is built on a huge fraud," said Widemair.
“On the first four albums we only played the instruments ourselves. From the fifth CD onwards, professional studio musicians were hired, ”says Rier. Norbert Rier himself played the drums at the beginning, he explained in the picture . According to the Kastelruther Spatzen, Widemair is said to have urged them not to play in the studio themselves and to leave the recordings to professional musicians, as in his opinion the musical performance was too bad for sound carriers. A live album recorded in Berlin was musically so bad that only the original drums could be used in addition to the voice. The German Phono Academy announced in a statement that the withdrawal of the echoes "in the course of the current and dubious reporting [...] is not up for debate".
Murder of Karl-Heinz Gross in 1998
On the evening of March 6, 1998, around 6:17 p.m., a truck driver found Karl-Heinrich Gross, the brother of Albin Gross and the manager of the Kastelruther Spatzen at the time, seriously injured on a path in an industrial area in Magdeburg on Steinkopf Island . Despite an emergency operation in the university clinic, the 38-year-old died a little later.
To date, the circumstances of his death have not been clarified. The authorities do not assume that an accident is the only cause of death. There was no lack of clues: According to the responsible public prosecutor, nearly 500 people were questioned during the investigation, but there were no decisive clues.
The folk music group had given a concert in town the previous evening. After that, Gross stayed in town alone to wait for a tour bus to be repaired. In the late afternoon of March 6, 1998, according to witnesses, Gross left a car repair shop in the Rothensee district on foot to an unknown destination. Less than an hour and a half later, he was found with severe injuries to his head and upper body on the access road to a company site about three kilometers away.
In the absence of direct eyewitnesses, forensic doctors and experts examined the type of injuries and the traces found in several reports. A robbery is considered unlikely as the victim still carried around 7,000 D-Marks in cash. According to the public prosecutor's office, the most likely theory is that Gross was initially hit by a jeep or truck. To cover up the accident, the victim was then presumably hit on the head with a blunt object and transported to the warehouse. As can be seen from the forensic medical reports, the injuries to the torso were most likely caused by being rolled over by a vehicle. In addition, at least two blows with a blunt object resulted in multiple cracks in the scalp.
An investigation team with more than 20 officers - the Soko "sparrows" - was assigned to the case. It was determined in all directions. The workshop employees were also targeted by the investigators as were two young forwarding employees who were the first to arrive at the site. However, the suspicions were just as little substantiated as in investigations into the personal environment of the victim. A Magdeburg fan club of the "Spatzen" came under suspicion because its official status had been revoked at the end of 1997 on suspicion of excessive membership fees. Here, too, the research remained inconclusive. The reenactment of the case in several television programs did not reveal any new traces.
The dead man's brother, keyboardist Albin Gross, said in an interview after the crime that the musicians had no hatred for East Germany. At some point they wanted to go on tour here again. They are now doing this regularly again.
Kastelruther Spatzenfest
The Kastelruther Spatzenfest is a big concert that has been held annually in your home town of Castelrotto since 1984. In 2014 the Kastelruther Spatzen celebrated their 30th sparrow festival. In 2008 around 50,000 visitors were counted. The visit to the stage and campaign appearance of Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini , whose right-wing populist - xenophobic party Lega Nord, was very popular in the South Tyrolean state elections immediately afterwards , caused a sensation and criticism .
