The Nockalm Quintet is an Austrian band of folk scene , which since the mid-1990s, mainly as a pop band is known. The name of the group is derived from the Nock Mountains in Carinthia. Many of the albums that have been released in the meantime achieved gold and platinum status in Austria.

Career

The group was founded in 1982 in Millstatt by Gottfried Würcher , Wilfried Wiederschwinger and Heinz Zwatz. Dietmar Zwischenberger and Rudi Schellander joined them by 1984 and they released their first album Rund um Bad Kleinkirchheim as the Nockalm Quintet . From the late 1980s the Nockalm Quintet appeared on television and was then able to record its first successes beyond Austrian borders. In 1989 they won the super hit parade on ZDF. At the time, Edmund Wallensteiner replaced the bass guitarist Schellander. With the album Aus Tränen Becomes a Butterfly they got their first chart position in Austria in 1990. This was followed by another chart album every year and with And about Rhodos I kiss you they came in 1994 for the first time at number 2 in the charts. From 1997 they were also successful in Switzerland. Accordion player Heinz Zwatz left in 1999 and although the group grew to seven members with keyboardist Arnd Herröder and guitarist Markus Holzer and in 2005 with drummer Siegfried Willmann, the term quintet was retained. With Das Mädchen Atlantis they were in the charts in Germany for the first time in 2002 and one year later they achieved their first number one position in Austria with Die kleine Insel Zärtlichkeit . In the following ten years, all albums except one Christmas album in 2012 reached either number 1 or number 2 in their home country.

At the beginning of 2016 Edmund Wallensteiner, Dietmar Zwischenberger and Arnd Herröder left the Nockalm Quintet to found the band Knicker Nocker together with Marco Diana . Kurt Strohmeier joined the Nockalm Quintet as the new keyboard player, so that the band with its five members is actually a quintet.

After the ex-trumpeter and drummer Zwischenberger could not be found for two weeks, he was found dead on October 27, 2016.

In 1991 the group took part in the Grand Prix of Folk Music for the first time and achieved 4th place for Germany , thanks to your sky-blue eyes . At the Grand Prix of Folk Music in 1992 they achieved a 9th place for Germany with And in the night, because I need to dream . After a less successful participation in the Grand Prix of Folk Music in 1993 , the long-awaited victory finally came in 2002. Together with the singer Stephanie they sang the song There on Cloud Seven and were thus able to bring the winner's trophy to Austria at the Grand Prix of Folk Music 2002 .

In 2001 the group's singer, Gottfried Würcher , received the folk music crown together with Norbert Rier ( Kastelruther Spatzen ) and Markus Wolfahrt ( Die Klostertaler ) . The big 3 of folk music received this award for the most spectacular media event of 2000. The three music groups have now also released two joint double CDs and DVDs. In addition, the Nockalm quintet has also recorded a title with Andrea Jürgens ( We reach for the stars ).

The Nockalm Quintet was nominated a total of seven times for an Amadeus Austrian Music Award .
