The Steinkopfinsel is an island in the Elbe and belongs to the area of the city of Magdeburg .
It is surrounded in the east by the Elbe and Rothenseer connecting canals and in the west by the Magdeburg canal . The island has a north-south extension of about 2.5 km with a width at the strongest point of only about 0.3 km. The Magdeburg low water lock is located in the Rothensee connecting canal .
During the GDR era, part of the coal state reserve was stored on the island .
The Magdeburg harbor facilities are in the immediate vicinity . The island, which belongs to the district of Gewerbegebiet Nord, has commercial settlements in the southern half. On the northern part of the island, two wind turbines from the manufacturer Enercon, which is directly opposite, were also built to generate electricity.
The name of the island could come from Oberamtmann Steinkopf from Klein Ottersleben . At least between 1791 and 1803, Steinkopf leased and successfully managed parts of what is now the Herrenkrugpark on the other side of the Elbe .
On the evening of March 6, 1998, Karl-Heinrich Gross , manager of the Kastelruther Spatzen music group , was found seriously injured on Steinkopfinsel. He died a short time later.
