The low water lock Magdeburg is a structure that was built as part of the Magdeburg waterway intersection . The lock system is located near Rothensee on Steinkopfinsel and is used to keep the water levels in the Rothenseer connecting canal (RVK) and in the port of Magdeburg at a high level all year round. It is only operated when the Elbe water levels are low and is open to free passage when the Elbe water levels are higher. The operation makes it possible to ensure a water level of around four meters. The usable length of the lock - analogous to the Rothensee and Hohenwarthe locks - is 190 meters. The usable chamber width is 25 meters. A pumping station was built next to the lock to maintain the water level and to operate the lock.

prehistory

A very similar plant had already been started before the Second World War . The two lock basins have been preserved a few hundred meters further south at the industrial port .

Emergence

In the course of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17, the only waterway project in this context, extensive construction work was carried out for the Magdeburg waterway intersection . In order to also connect the Magdeburg ports and make them more economically usable, a new lock was planned in the southern section of the Rothenseer connecting canal to the Elbe in order to be able to keep the water levels in Magdeburg port at a minimum level of four meters.

The new construction of the Rothensee lock , which allows the descent of large motor cargo ships and push convoys with a draft of up to 2.80 m, also makes it necessary to dredge the connecting section below the lock for such unloading depths. The maximum utilization of the unloading depth can only take place if the water levels in the Rothensee connecting canal (formerly the Rothensee descent canal) allow this. The water levels here were previously dependent on the Elbe, since the connection to the Elbe was open and the fluctuations in the water level of the Elbe had a direct impact on the Rothensee connecting canal and thus the Magdeburg ports.

Preparations for the actual construction of the Magdeburg low water lock began in 2006. This included, for example, the disposal of ordnance in the construction area and the dismantling of old structures (three culvert pipes ) in the construction area.

With the ceremonial first pile-driving on May 23, 2007 the construction work officially began. The lock chamber was opened for shipping on July 7, 2011. The construction of the pumping station was affected by the floods in spring 2013 .

It was opened to traffic on December 12, 2013.

The cost of building the low water lock came to around 65 million euros. The construction project was funded with 27.3 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund.
