Niegripp is a rural district of the district town of Burg (near Magdeburg) . It is located seven kilometers west of the city center of Burger and is surrounded on all sides by water. The Elbe and the Elbe-Havel Canal run past the site, the Niegripper connecting canal in the south and the Niegripper old canal in the north connect both waterways. The abundance of water is completed by the 120 hectare large Niegripper Lake on the eastern edge of the village , a former gravel pit, which is used as a local recreation area.

The district road 1215 / Landesstrasse 52 runs through Niegripp, which leads to the district town in the north and to the neighboring town of Hohenwarthe with a junction to the A2 motorway in the south . Agricultural areas surround the place in the south and north. A wetland of the Elbe meadows extends to the Elbe, one kilometer away.

Since the place name is of Slavic origin, the Niegripper area will have been inhabited as early as the 10th century. The place is said to have been mentioned as early as 948 in connection with the Heinrichsberg on the opposite bank of the Elbe . According to the “Handbook of Historic Places in Germany” (see sources), Niegripp was first mentioned in 1136. In 1158 and 1185, Wichmann Gisilbert and Nikolaus von Nigrebe were listed as vassals of Magdeburg's Archbishop . The archbishopric maintained a castle in Niegripp, which was besieged in vain in 1215 by Emperor Otto IV in a fight against his Staufer adversaries. The von Niegripp family was last mentioned in 1368.

In 1428 Niegripp was pledged to two Magdeburg citizens, then the archbishopric and the city of Magdeburg fought over the place, which was finally conquered for the city in 1432 by the city governor Henning. In 1458 the von Treskow family is named as the owner of the place and the castle. In 1466 she sold the castle, which was occupied by robber barons, to the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Johann. In addition to the von Treskows, well-known families such as von Erxleben and von Wulffen also lived in the village in the period that followed. Both during the Thirty Years' War and the Elbe flood of 1655, Niegripp suffered severe damage, from which the castle did not recover and fell into disrepair over time.

With the end of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg, the place came under the Brandenburg-Prussian rule in 1680 . Prussia's King Friedrich Wilhelm I acquired the Niegripp Castle estate and other neighboring properties around 1730 to create a domain office for his son Prince Heinrich . In 1732 the king ordered the construction of a stately church in Niegripp (see buildings) and three years later the establishment of a school. When Prussia reformed its territorial administration in 1815, Niegripp was incorporated into the Jerichow I district with the district town of Burg.

In order to expand the Plau Canal , which was built in the 18th century, the Ihle Canal was created between 1865 and 1871 , which began north of Niegripp with a lock ( Alte Schleuse Niegripp ) towards the Elbe. Several brick factories took advantage of the convenient transport route and the existing mining areas to set up in the Niegripper area. In 1885, twelve brickworks were in operation between Niegripp and neighboring Schartau. Until the decline of the brick industry after the First World War, they shaped the economic structure of the town. Then he had to return to his traditional agricultural character. This did not affect the development, however, because the population of Niegripp rose from 1,012 in 1910 to 1,274 in 1939. With the expansion of the Ihle Canal as part of the new Elbe-Havel Canal, the new Niegripper lock, located south of the village, was put into operation in 1938 after a two-year construction period. The old lock was still usable for pleasure craft until 1942 and was then finally decommissioned.

With the GDR territorial reform, Niegripp came to the Burg district in 1952. The Elbe ferry to Heinrichsberg was shut down in 1955. In 1964 the number of inhabitants had decreased to 1,182. The downward trend continued even after the fall of 1989, although a favorable infrastructure was created with an agricultural cooperative and several construction companies. On December 1, 2002, the incorporation into Burg took place, the former Mayor of Magdeburg Wilhelm Polte was elected mayor.

Buildings

  • The village church Niegripp was in 1732 at the behest of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm I. by the surveyor Friedrich August Fiedler built.
  • The Niegripp lock , also known as the new lock , was put into operation together with the Rothensee ship lift after a two-year construction period in 1938. It is used to guide ships on the direct route from the Elbe towards the north into the Elbe-Havel Canal. To do this, the ships pass the 1.8 km long Niegripper connecting canal northeast of Magdeburg. The importance of the lock decreased significantly with the opening of the trough bridge over the Mittelland Canal. The lock chamber is 167.60 m long and 12.20 m wide, the structure is made of reinforced concrete, the chamber walls are anchored steel sheet piling and the lock gates are made of steel.
