The old lock Niegripp , previously only lock Niegripp , is a lock structure in the town of Niegripp in central Saxony-Anhalt .
description
The old lock Niegripp is located in the Niegripper old canal , a federal waterway . The lock was built as the Niegripp lock during the construction of the Ihle Canal from 1865 to 1872. Depending on the water level of the Elbe, it enabled the ascent or descent to it. The Ihle Canal was expanded from 1883 to 1891.
From 1926 to 1938 the Plauer and Ihle canals were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel canal . In the course of the expansion and planning of the construction of the Magdeburg waterway intersection , the Niegripper connecting canal with the new Niegripp lock was built to the southwest . The western end of the Ihle Canal, in which the Old Niegripp Lock is located, became the Niegripper Old Canal. The old lock was shut down. The miter gates of the lock have been removed and a mound as in the sluice chamber Afsluitdike heaped between the channel and Elbe. As far as the lock, the old canal is navigable on the Elbe side and the federal waterway called the old Ihle Canal near Niegripp.
The lock is listed as a monument .
