The Niegripp Lock , sometimes also called the New Niegripp Lock , is an inland lock that has been connecting the waterways of the canal area east of the Elbe with the river itself since 1938 . It is located at kilometer 0.68 of the federal waterway Niegripper connecting canal in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt .
The lock
After two years of construction, the Niegripp lock was opened to traffic in 1938 at the same time as the Rothensee ship lift . The height of fall in the lock varies between 5.20 meters and minus 1.35 meters. The reason is the often strongly changing water level of the Elbe. It was therefore also equipped with lifting gates that seal on both sides and that have an additional seal made of spring steel. The lock gates have a bidirectional function, ie both the Elbe and the canal can be defended against each other, regardless of which side the water is higher. The lock heads are made of reinforced concrete. The chamber walls were constructed as steel sheet piling. These steel sheet piles are anchored laterally in the ground. A pumping station belongs to the lock. It is intended to ensure water retention in the canal between Niegripp and the Zorien lock . The lock is integrated into the Elbe dike and thus guarantees flood protection for the lower-lying canal area.
history
The old Niegripp lock was built east of the village along the Ihle Canal . It was built between 1865 and 1872 and is located about 2.60 kilometers northeast of the new Niegripp lock. The height of fall in the old Niegripper lock was determined by the changing water levels of the Elbe. It was built as a domed lock with three heads, i.e. with two chambers one behind the other. Each chamber had a usable length of 47 meters. The total usable length of the lock was 98.5 meters, the usable width was 8 meters. In the event of a water shortage in the canal area of what was then the Ihle Canal, there was a canal in each chamber wall of the old Niegripp lock with gates as closing organs for introducing Elbe water into the canal.
