The Zerbe lock is a lock structure in the course of the Elbe-Havel Canal between the towns of Zorien and Güsen in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

Between the years 1926 and 1938, the existing Plauer Canal and Ihle Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal. In connection with this expansion, the existing four dams of the two channels with were lock Ihleburg , lock Bergzow , lock Kade and lock Plaue to the two barrages of the lock Zerben and the Wusterwitz lock together. As a result of expansion work as part of the expansion of the canal as the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 , both locks received a second, southern chamber. The cost of expanding the Zorben lock was 62 million euros. The EU Commission contributed to the cost of building the second lock chamber as part of its funding programs for the expansion of the Trans-European Networks (TEN-T) from 2016 to 2018. It co-financed the construction project with 6.46 million euros.

description

The Zerbe lock has a northern and a southern lock chamber, so that two locks are possible at the same time. It is located at kilometer 345.45 of the Mittelland Canal and Elbe-Havel Canal. The lock is listed as a monument .

North chamber

The north chamber of the Zorben lock was built between December 1934 and the end of 1938. A tow lock was built with a length of 225 meters and a width of 12 meters. The head and chamber walls of the lock are made of reinforced concrete. The sole is paved. The head of the lock is closed by a hinged gate , the lower head by a stem gate . There is a bridge over the lower head. There is a height-adjustable shock protection device under the bridge. The control building of the lock is also located at the lower head. The maximum drop height is 5.82 meters, the minimum 3.76 meters. The usable chamber length is 217.86 meters, the chamber width 12.00 meters.

Southern chamber

To the south, directly next to the Zorben lock, the property was reserved for the construction of a second lock as early as the 1930s. The project that was taken up again included the new construction of the second lock chamber, including the upper and lower head, the outer harbors, the weir systems on the Zerbeer Altarm and the three bridges belonging to the Zeren-Güsen local road. These include the bridges over the Zerbeer oxbow lake and the lock outer harbors. The order for the southern lock in Zorien was placed in March 2013 by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development . The planned costs of the project at that time amounted to around 14.2 million euros . The new lock chamber was opened to traffic on March 19, 2018. The second lock was built with a center distance of 45 meters south of the existing lock chamber. It has a usable chamber length of 190 meters and a width of 12.50 meters. The lock has a maximum fall height of 5.50 meters. The marine call channel is VHF Channel 20.
