The Wusterwitz lock forms the lock group of the Wusterwitz canal stage at the eastern end of the Elbe-Havel canal between the municipality of Wusterwitz and the village of Woltersdorf in the municipality of Bensdorf in the German state of Brandenburg . The lock is partly in both communities.

Old lock (Nordschleuse)

The first Wusterwitz lock , formerly also known as Großwusterwitz, was built from 1927 to July 1930. A tow lock was built with a length of 225 and a width of 12 meters. The head and chamber walls of the lock are made of reinforced concrete. The lock walls were also faced with red clinker bricks. The head of the lock is closed by a hinged gate , the lower head by a stem gate . There is a bridge over the lower head. A height-adjustable shock protection device is installed under the bridge to protect the gates against impact from ships. The previous control building of the lock is also located on the lower part. The maximum fall height is 4.75 meters, the minimum 2.95 meters. This situation occurs at the highest possible high water level of the Havel. Locking is not possible when the water level is higher. In the underwater of the lock, the Havel level is between the suburban lock Brandenburg at kilometer 55.55 in the Havel and the Bahnitz lock at kilometer 81.95 on the Lower Havel waterway .

New lock (south lock)

As part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 , a new lock is being built next to the existing Wusterwitz lock. On October 27, 2008, the symbolic first groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new south lock and the upper outer port took place. The 12.50 meter wide lock chamber has a usable length of 190 meters. The maximum fall height is also 4.75 meters, the minimum 2.95 meters. The lock receives a modern and economical hydraulic side filling system. The head and the lower head are closed by mortise gates and slide gates are installed for opening and closing the longitudinal channels. All operating locks are driven by electric lifting cylinders.

A bridge leads over the lower head of the lock to the middle dam. On the east side of the lock is the new lock operating building, from which both locks and the weir can be controlled in the future. The southern mooring areas in the outer harbors are each 440 meters long and limited by anchored sheet pile walls to a width of 80 meters. In addition to the new construction of the Wusterwitz south lock, the existing rifle weir in the Woltersdorf old canal will be replaced by a modern 5 meter wide fish- bellied valve weir . This is driven on one side by an electric lifting cylinder.

The opening of the new lock (southern chamber) was planned for 2014. During the closure of the northern chamber in March 2015, shipping was able to bypass the Lower Havel. The construction work on the new lock is suspended due to construction defects. A new opening date has not yet been set.

VHF

The marine call channel is VHF channel 18.

Accompanying measures

In the lock area, new green areas were created and trees were set. The inclined banks that were created were greened and reed planted in some areas . Old structures were removed and the floor unsealed. Amphibian exits were built.
