The suburban lock Brandenburg is a two-chamber lock in the Lower Havel waterway in Brandenburg an der Havel . While the previous buildings of the city lock handled the locks for cargo shipping through the city of Brandenburg, today's city lock is a pure sport boat lock, while commercial shipping is handled via the suburban lock.

history

The Havel was an important transport route for bulk goods as early as the Middle Ages . Shipping was of great importance because it was the only way to transport large loads. In the middle of the 13th century, several mill dams were created in the branching arms of the Havel in the area of the city of Brandenburg . This led to conflicts with the shipping industry, as the roads were blocked. In this context, an old arm of the Havel, the Flutgraben, today Jakobsgraben outside the city was expanded into a new shipping route. The barrage was overcome by means of an old weir with a wooden channel. This shipping route was used until around 1550. In the middle of the 16th century, the former moat around the Neustadt was expanded like a canal and a wooden boiler lock , the first predecessor of the Brandenburg city lock, was built in the area of the stone gate tower. This wooden lock structure was used for almost four centuries until it was decommissioned in 1920 and has been renewed several times. With industrialization and the increase in commercial shipping, the lock reached the limit of its capacity in 1870. This year alone, 12,779 barges were funneled. Due to the resulting considerable waiting times and increasing ship sizes ( Plauer Maß ), a new lock, the Brandenburg suburban lock, was built between 1881 and 1883 in the Cracow suburb east of the city. The dimensions were chamber length 67.00 meters, chamber width 16.60 meters and door width 8.40 meters.

At the beginning of the 20th century, three major projects were tackled to improve conditions for shipping and to protect against floods. To the south of the chamber of the suburban lock, a second, tow lock, was built, the silo trench was expanded into a silo canal and the so-called Stimmingsarche, a weir in the Kraków suburb, was renewed. The second lock was built between 1906 and 1909 to allow larger ships than Plauer-made barges to pass through. Furthermore, tow trains as a whole should be able to pass through the facility and time-consuming individual lockings of barges should be prevented. The dimensions of the new lock chamber were measured with a chamber length of 220.00 meters, a chamber width of 17.50 meters and a gate width of 10.00 meters.

In the 1950s and 60s, for example, the lock operation in the facility was electrified and the tow lock was equipped with a rope tread system in order to simplify and also to speed up the locks of larger tow trains. The further increase in shipping around Brandenburg and the age of the northern chamber lock from 1882 made a new building necessary. In 1970 the new sheet pile lock with massive heads on the north side was completed. In addition, the operating systems were renewed and a central control station was built between the two lock basins. Since the new building, the north chamber has been 170 meters long and 12.10 meters wide.

Shipping fee lifting point

Until the introduction of modern means of communication such as teleprinter , VHF radio and telephone and the possibility of cashless money transactions, the shipping fees for the use of the waterways and descent structures had to be settled by the shipowners on behalf of the shipowner or owner at fixed locks and lifts , sometimes even in cash get paid. The facilities were called Schiffahrt-Abgabe-Hebstelle , lifting point for short .
