The Bischofswerder lock is located at kilometer 4.53 of the Voss Canal near Bischofswerder, a residential area of the non-governmental, district-related town of Liebenwalde in the Oberhavel district in Brandenburg . The canal is part of the Upper Havel Waterway (OHW) and belongs to waterway class II. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

history

The first lock Bischofswerder, then called Bischofswerderschleuse I, was built between 1880 and 1884 during the construction of the Voss Canal. Exact data of the lock are not transmitted, but it is assumed that it corresponded to the Finow dimension , i.e. had a usable length of at least 40.50 meters and a width of about 5.00 meters.

Due to the increased shipping traffic and the resulting long waiting times at only one lock, a second lock was built at this point in 1889, called Bischofswerderschleuse II in the Voss Canal. The lock dimensions were similar. The waterway was of great importance for the development of Berlin. In the period before the First World War , around 1.75 million tons of bricks were transported each year on the Voss Canal for the expansion of Berlin. In the 1930s, the cross-section of the canal was enlarged and the Krewelin lock and the Bischofswerder lock were partially built to benefit shipping . One of the old locks was replaced by a new one in 1933. The lock was adapted to the Groß-Finow size, the usable length of the chamber was 41 meters and it was 6.30 meters wide and has a bulge 16, 80 meters long on one side. The resulting width of 10.30 meters was used to accommodate a tug during the lock process.

At the end of the 1980s, an increase in brick production and the construction of a new gas concrete plant in Zehdenick were planned. The existing lock in Bischofswerder would no longer have been able to cope with the shipping traffic and would represent an obstacle to the transport of building materials on the waterway. The lock had to be rebuilt. Construction began in 1989, and traffic was opened in 1991. In the period from October 2007 to March 2008, the Bischofswerder lock was closed to shipping as planned. During the blocking period, the lock was repaired and modernized as well as the switch to semi-automatic self-service operation with remote monitoring.

automation

The lock process has been fully automated since 2003. The lock is monitored and controlled by the Zehdenick monitoring center (ÜZZ), which went into operation in 2002. With the completion of the modernization and automation program, 27 of 39 locks, all 47 weirs and the 3 movable bridges in the portfolio of the Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office will be operated centrally, fully automatically or in automated self-service.

tourism

Since the Obere Havel waterway is no longer used by cargo ships and is only used by a few small passenger ships, it has developed into a popular area for sports boats of all sizes and classes.
