The Brandenburg City Lock (also Sportbootschleuse Brandenburg ) is a lock in the Brandenburg City Canal in Brandenburg an der Havel . While the previous buildings of the city lock managed to lock cargo shipping through the city of Brandenburg, today's building is a pure pleasure boat lock.

history

Boiler lock

The boiler lock in 1908

The Havel was an important transport route for bulk goods as early as the Middle Ages . Shipping was of great importance because it was the only way to transport large loads. In the middle of the 13th century, several mill dams were created in the branching arms of the Havel in the area of the city of Brandenburg . This led to conflicts with the shipping industry, as the roads were blocked. In this context, an old arm of the Havel, the Flutgraben, today Jakobsgraben outside the city was expanded into a new shipping route. The barrage was overcome by means of a wooden lock . This shipping route was used until around 1550. In the middle of the 16th century, the former moat around the Neustadt was expanded like a canal and a wooden boiler lock , the first predecessor of the city lock, was built in the area of the stone gate tower. This lock had a chamber length of 69.00 meters, a chamber width of 38.60 meters and gate widths of 7.89 meters at the upper gate and 7.20 meters at the lower gate. This wooden lock structure was used for almost four centuries until it was decommissioned in 1920 and has been renewed several times.

With industrialization and the increase in commercial shipping, the lock reached the limit of its capacity in 1870. This year alone, 12,779 barges were funneled. Due to the resulting considerable waiting times and increasing ship sizes ( Plauer Maß ), a new lock, the Brandenburg suburban lock, was built in the Cracow suburb between 1881 and 1883 . This was expanded further in the following decades.

Chamber lock

In order to continue to offer a second shipping route for smaller barges, the outdated wooden boiler lock was torn down in 1926 and a smaller concrete and steel chamber lock was built in its place. This had the dimensions of chamber length 23.00 meters, chamber width 5.30 meters and door width 5.30 meters. After seventy years, this was replaced by a new building in 1996. Since this new building, the chamber length is 21.07 meters and the chamber width 5.30 meters. The upper gate is a lift gate , the lower gate a stem gate .
