The Jakobsgraben (historically also Flutgraben ) is a canal in the urban area of Brandenburg an der Havel . He served mainly in the late Middle Ages and early modern period of Havel waterway as a waterway and was more than 200 years Hauptschifffahrtsweg around the city.

history

Already in the Middle Ages, in the 13th century, dams were raised in the branching Havel on both sides of the cathedral island of Brandenburg and water mills were installed. These were an obstacle for river navigation , the Havel had been an important traffic route early on. To circumnavigate the mill dam, a flood channel, the Jakobsgraben, was created in 1321, probably using the arms of the Havel and existing drainage ditches. This leads in a wide arc, through which the gradient could be compensated on a long drive, south around the Neustadt Brandenburg . A wooden lock , the ark, was installed in the flood ditch . The use was chargeable. The Archegeld was divided between the Neustadt and the Elector of Brandenburg . The free arche or the flood ditch was the main shipping route until 1551. After that was the Brandenburg city canal to the city gate Brandenburg expanded and continuous shipping route and the Flutgraben was mainly for drainage ditch. Nevertheless, Jakobsgraben was and is used on both sides up to the blocking weirs for non-continuous shipping or boat traffic.

The Jakobsgraben was Reichswasserstraße , but was not a federal waterway , as it was administered by the water management authorities of the GDR on October 1, 1989 and was not taken over by the federal waterways and shipping administration until December 25, 1993 , which is why a return transfer is excluded.

description

In formal terms, the Jakobsgraben is considered to be any other body of water connected to the waterways. According to the Brandenburg Water Act, it can be used by the general public, which means that it is actually only allowed to be driven on with muscle-powered boats and is no longer navigable. Accordingly, it is neither a federal waterway nor a state waterway . It is looked after by the Lower Water Authority .

The Jakobsgraben begins southeast of the Brandenburg Neustadt on the city canal, initially runs in a southerly direction before turning south of the Brandenburg main station in a westerly or northwestern direction. To the west of the main station, the Pumpengraben flows into the Jakobsgraben. Three weirs, the weir lock Jakobsgraben, the rail passage and the Manhattan weir, are installed in the Jakobsgraben. Several bridges lead over the canal, one of which is a listed building.
