A flood (also called flood , free flood (er) , free arche , free lock or flood canal ) is an artificially created bypass in hydraulic engineering and hydrology , more rarely a naturally created branch of a flowing water , which is used in particular during floods , structures or other To protect objects on the main course from flooding by diverting part of the amount of water through the flood around the object to be protected.

To control the amount of water one is usually the main course of the river dam built, the amount of water and the water level is limited in the main run. In front of or at the weir, the floodwater branches off to the side - as a fixed overflow or as a variable relief.

Floodlights are used particularly frequently on water mills and run-of-river power plants . If the water power machine contained therein is not in operation or has reached its maximum capacity, the excess amount of water is discharged via the flood system.

Depending on the size of the object to be protected, the length of the flood can vary greatly: In the case of a single building such as a mill or a power plant, the flood and the main course often merge again in the underwater immediately after being divided. If, on the other hand, larger objects or entire localities are protected, the flood can be conducted as a canal or a natural tributary over longer distances before it meets the main course again.
