The boat lock Bahnitz on military Bahnitz is a barrier over the lower Havel waterway . In the area of the weir, the Havel forms the border between the town of Havelsee in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district and the municipality of Milower Land in the Havelland district . Until the replacement of the weir and the barge lock between 2007 and 2011, the lock was on the right bank of the Havel in the Pritzerbe district , in Havelsee. The new building was erected on the left bank of the river in Bahnitz (Milower Land).

History and structure

In 1904 it was stipulated by law that in the area of the Lower Havel below the city of Brandenburg, the drainage conditions were to be improved so that river meadows that are not diked should have dried up by June 1st of each year at the latest. As a first construction measure, the river cross-section was widened in many places. Furthermore, punctures were made in the area of river bends . One such breakthrough occurred near the village of Bahnitz. In order to counter adverse effects in dry periods due to the accelerated drainage due to the shortening of the flow distance, dams were built at Bahnitz, Grütz and Garz . These dams consist of large needle weirs in the middle of the river, which are supposed to maintain the required water level, and small weirs on the edges. These were created with a flow width of 6.40 meters for fine adjustments. In order to enable the Havel shipping to overcome the weirs, tow locks were built in the breakthroughs. These each have a length of 215 meters, a chamber width of 23 meters and a gate width of 10 meters. The slope built up by the weirs and to be overcome by the locks is only slight. The Bahnitz lock was completed in 1910, two years before the weirs. Furthermore, barge locks for smaller watercraft were built in the area of the weirs. The Bahnitz barge lock was built in the natural meander of the Havel not far from the Bahnitz lock in the weir. The weir systems at Bahnitz were completed in 1912.

The barge locks at Grütz and Garz, which existed next to the large tow locks, were later demolished and of the three previous structures, only the barge lock at Bahnitz remained. Between 2007 and 2011 the weir and the barge sluice were completely renovated. For example, a replacement new building was built on the left bank of the Havel for the outdated boat lock that was on the right bank, and a fish ladder was installed in place of the old boat lock . The renovation costs amounted to around 4.2 million euros. Even after the new building, the barge lock is designed for manual self-service operation. The usable length is 12 meters, the usable width is 2.70 meters.
