The Garz lock is a lock in a breakthrough in the course of the Lower Havel waterway near the Garz district of the city of Havelberg in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt .

history

In 1904, the then administration of the Kingdom of Prussia passed a law to improve the flooding conditions in the area of the Lower Havel below the city of Brandenburg, stating that un-diked river meadows should have dried up by June 1 of each year at the latest. As a first construction measure, the river cross-section was widened in many places and punctures were made in the area of river bends . One such breakthrough occurred near the village of Bahnitz. In order to counter adverse effects in dry periods due to the accelerated water drainage due to the shortening of the flow path , dams were built at Bahnitz , Grütz and Garz. These dams consist of large needle weirs in the middle of the river, which maintain the required water level, and small gates with a flow width of 6.40 meters for fine adjustments. These weir systems near Garz were completed in 1911. Furthermore, barge locks for smaller watercraft were built. Not far from the Garz lock, the Garz barge lock was built, but was demolished when the weir was renovated in the first decade of the 21st century.

In order to enable Havel shipping to overcome or bypass the weirs, tow locks were built in the breakthroughs. These each have a length of 215 meters, a chamber width of 23 meters and a gate width of 10 meters. The slope built up by the weirs and to be overcome by the locks is only slight. The Garz lock was completed in 1912, one year after the weirs. However, the gate width of the lock chamber is extremely tight for modern cabin passenger ships. It can be observed that the passage must be mastered with bilateral steering maneuvers and additional information about the position of the bow and stern. The bridge leading over the lock and the Havel was planned after the fall of the Wall in 2000 and built as a replacement in 2001 because the previous stone bridge no longer met the requirements. The dimensions of the steel construction are: 30 m span, 6 m width, clear passage height 3.55 m.

Needle weir

The weir belonging to the dam is located in the Untere Havel waterway to the east at kilometer 129.020 in the weir arm. The needle weir with rifle weir has a total width of 57.75 meters. The needle weir is 49.10 meters wide. The weir closure is done with 375 needles. The width of the rifle defense is 6.40 meters.
