The Bredereiche lock is located at km 47.90 of the Upper Havel waterway in Bredereiche in the Oberhavel district . Bredreiche is a district of the city of Fürstenberg / Havel in the north of the state of Brandenburg . Until 2003 Bredereiche was an independent municipality .
history
The construction of the first lock in the Havel in 1737 laid the foundation stone for the development of the place into a Schifferdorf. Due to the barrage created in the river, it decisively improved the conditions for shipping and rafting at the time. In 1915 there were 54 ship owners in Bredereiche. A more modern lock was built parallel to the old lock from 1950 to 1952. For this purpose, a new canal bed about 400 meters long was excavated parallel to the old Havel. A height difference of 3.20 m is compensated with a combination of mortise and lifting gate. In the place of the old lock there is now a hydropower plant for generating electricity. A bridge with Schleusenstraße leads over the lower head of the lock.
tourism
Since the Obere Havel waterway is no longer used by cargo ships and is only used by a few small passenger ships, it has developed into a popular area for sports boats of all sizes and classes.
