Building

The Zaaren lock has a usable chamber length of 42.79 meters and a chamber width of 5.60 meters. The drop height is 0.92 meters. After a modernization it works in automatic mode or has to be operated by yourself.

Blocking 2018/2000

Construction work began on the lock in November 2018, which was originally intended to last until the start of the 2019 summer season. In March 2019, the Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office announced that the renovation of the lock heads had been delayed due to delays caused by ammunition finds and difficult subsoil conditions and that they could not be opened again until August 1, 2019. However, this date could not be realized. Since the Mecklenburg Lake District could not be reached via waterways from Berlin when the lock was closed, high economic losses were expected in the tourism and leisure shipping industry. There was also no large alternative route via other canals because the Garwitz lock on the Müritz-Elde waterway was also closed in summer 2019 . The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office temporarily reopened the Zaaren lock from November 7, 2019. The direct waterway between Berlin and the Mecklenburg Lake District was blocked for about a year due to construction work. The lock was officially reopened in April 2020 and the waterway from the Müritz to Berlin is continuously navigable.
