The Finow measure was the first standardized inland waterway measure . These dimensions are still important today for the planning of canals and locks, the Groß-Finow dimension corresponds to Category I of inland waterways . The Finow dimension was specifically set for the Finow Canal in 1845 when its locks were renewed. The ships were called Finow Maßkähne . A few decades later, the Groß-Finow measure was adopted .

The Finow dimension was decisive for the specification of inland waterway class I east of the Elbe.
