Hermann Heinrich Howaldt
Hermann Howaldt (actually Hermann Heinrich Howaldt , born January 5, 1841 in Braunschweig ; † December 2, 1891 ibid) was a German sculptor , ore caster and copper driver .
Life
Hermann Howaldt was born in Braunschweig as the son and fifth child of the ore caster and copper maker Professor Georg Ferdinand Howaldt . Like his brother August, he first learned the demanding artistic craft in his workshop on Helmstedter Strasse . The artist family's fine art foundry soon traded under the name of Georg Howaldt & Sohn . Hermann Howaldt married Helene Brust on March 21, 1872 in Braunschweig and had six children with her.
From 1880 onwards he was solely responsible for the orders and their execution. After the death of his father, he continued the foundry until his own tragic death. During the execution of the 4.8 m high and 1.7 t heavy Fama for the glass dome of the exhibition building of the Dresden Art Academy , he fell from the scaffolding. The long-time employee and sculptor Paul Rinckleben initially took over the foundry on a lease basis and completed the work that had already started.
Hermann's son Ferdinand Adolf Howaldt, who had practically learned ore casting and studied at the Technical University of Braunschweig as well as the art workshops in Stuttgart and Cologne , entered the fine art foundry in 1903 in the third generation with the necessary capital, despite already significant economic difficulties, but the company had to Filed for bankruptcy in 1906.
