Howaldt is a German family name . In an interpretation from 1925, the name is derived from Hugold and this again from the Gothic huge , Old High German hugu = "thinking spirit ". Huginwalt = "who rules with the spirit".

The Howaldt founding family , which is treated in the German gender book of 1936, can be traced back to Jacob Howaldt (around 1530), master furrier in Löbejün near Halle im Saalekreis .
