Hermann Howaldt (* 26. November 1852 in Kiel ; † 17th May 1900 ) was a German engineer and entrepreneur , co-founder and board member of Howaldtswerke AG , today Howaldtswerke- German Werft AG (HDW), in which he described the department Engineering headed .

Life

After attending the Kiel School of Academics , he did an apprenticeship in the mechanical engineering institute Schweffel & Howaldt of his father August Howaldt in Kiel. He then studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover .

In 1880 he took over together with the brothers Georg and Bernhard father's company, which under the company Gebrüder Howaldt was continued. He worked as a chief designer and later as operations manager ( "... has been responsible for executing orders since 1880" ). With the incorporation of the Howaldt brothers company into Howaldtswerke AG in 1889, Hermann Howaldt became a board member and director of the Howaldtswerke AG machine factory . Until 1900 he was a member of the district council for the district of Kiel in Bordesholm .

Hermann Howaldt was married to Emma Amalia Christiane geb. Jungclaussen (born March 11, 1859 in Meldorf; † March 31, 1885 in Dietrichsdorf; marriage on November 20, 1881 in Flensburg) and in second marriage to Maria Elisabeth Magdalena, nee. Jungclaussen (born May 17, 1852 in Kiel; † May 17, 1930 in Kitzeberg; marriage on December 10, 1886 in Kiel). When he died on May 17, 1900, he had five children. His son Erwin married Anneliese Scheibe, the daughter of the mineralogist Professor Robert Scheibe in Berlin.

HDW has been a ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems company since 2005 .

In Kiel-Diedrichsdorf, at the mouth of the Schwentine, all that remains of the original shipyard is the old metal foundry built in 1884 by the most famous Kiel architect of his time, Heinrich Moldenschardt , which was expanded to become an industrial museum.
