The old metal foundry of the " Kiel Shipyard " by Georg Howaldt , built in 1884 at the mouth of the Schwentine , is the oldest surviving example of the development of the shipyard industry on the east bank of the Kiel Fjord .

In the metal foundry, objects such as frames for portholes , switch panels, fittings , levers and fittings as well as parts of the technology and equipment made of brass , copper or bronze were manufactured.

The well-known architect Heinrich Moldenschardt (1839-1891), a student of Gottfried Semper , provided the design for this high-quality industrial architecture . The building is a yellow brick building with red stripes and a square floor plan, from the center of which the chimney protrudes. The façades are broken up and structured by pairs of rounded windows on the upper floor. The former chimney has now been replaced by a dummy metal grid.

In 1980 the foundry was finally shut down. In 1985, the city of Kiel acquired the old shipyard and most of the structures were demolished. Only the metal foundry remained. In 1992 the building was entered in the Schleswig-Holstein register of monuments and is therefore a listed building .

The right of use was transferred to the Howaldtsche Metallgießerei eV industrial museum on January 1, 2005 . The renovation and renovation were carried out with funds from the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) in the amount of € 415,000, the URBAN II funding program of the European Community and donations from Kiel citizens and association members. In the presence of Prime Minister Peter Harry Carstensen , the museum was opened on May 20, 2007 on the occasion of International Museum Day . From 2020, the industrial museum will be operated as a branch of the Kiel City and Maritime Museum.

Museum operation

The museum is run exclusively on a voluntary basis. The museum shows a completely preserved foundry workshop on the upper floor. Image panels and video films illustrate the production process. Exhibits and molds show which products were made here. A small casting system gives the opportunity to demonstrate a casting process with a casting mold and molding sand.
