Wolfgang Zorn

Wolfgang Zorn (born October 3, 1922 in Augsburg ; † July 8, 2004 there ) was a German economic historian . Zorn is one of the most important representatives of social and economic history after the Second World War in the Federal Republic of Germany and is considered a nestor of regional historical research .

Live and act

Wolfgang Zorn came from an old Reichstadt merchant family with Allgäu and Lechswabian relatives. He attended the humanistic St. Anna High School in Augsburg and studied at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Breslau . In 1945 he received his doctorate in Munich under Karl Alexander von Müller and Paul Lehmann on imperial journalism of the late 18th century. Zorn was from 1947/1948 under Michael Seidlmayer and Ulrich Noack scientific assistant at the seminar for Medieval and Modern History of the Philosophical Faculty at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1951 there was a study visit to Harvard University . In 1955 he became a research assistant for the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in the editorial department of the New German Biography and took over the newly created editorial management of the economic biographies . In 1955, Zorn published a basic work on Swabian history with the map series “ Historical Atlas of Bavarian Swabia ”. From 1956 he was a lecturer in modern history at the Munich School of Politics . In 1958, Zorn became a research assistant to Friedrich Lütge at the chair for economics and economic history in Munich. In 1959, Franz Schnabel completed his habilitation on the history of trade and industry in Bavarian Swabia from the end of the Thirty Years War to the founding of the Bismarck Empire . In 1961 he had a teaching position at the Augsburg University of Education. In 1962, Zorn took over the newly created chair for economic and social history at the University of Bonn . From 1967 until his retirement in 1991 he was professor of economic and social history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1976, Zorn turned down a call to the chair of Alfred Hoffmann at the University of Vienna .

In 1949, Zorn was one of the founding members of the Swabian Research Association , with which he remained closely associated throughout his life. From 1961 to 1981 he was a member of the Society for Economic and Social History . Since 1968 he was a member of the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and since 1977 a member of the commission for Bavarian national history .

Zorn was editor of the Schwäbische Blätter for popular education and homeland care and, from 1968 to 1996, of the quarterly journal for social and economic history . The urban and regional history work on Augsburg, Swabia and Bavaria formed a research focus. His book on Augsburg, The History of a European City , published in four editions, made Zorn the leading expert on the history of his hometown.
