Rolf Kießling

Rolf Kießling (born July 25, 1941 in Augsburg ; † June 22, 2020 in Bonstetten ) was a German historian who primarily worked on the history of the Bavarian Swabia region .

From 1960 to 1966, Kießling studied history, German and geography at the universities of Munich and Erlangen . He received his doctorate in 1969 in Munich under Karl Bosl with a study of civil society and the church in Augsburg in the late Middle Ages. He completed his habilitation in 1985 and held a substitute professorship for theory and didactics of history at the KU Eichstätt . From 1994 to 2007 he was the successor to Pankraz Fried and held the chair for Bavarian and Swabian regional history at the University of Augsburg .

He has been a member since 1974 and was first chairman of the Swabian Research Foundation from 2001 to 2016 , headed the scientific advisory board of the Jewish Culture Museum in Augsburg , the Friends of the Augsburg City Archives and the Eugen Liedl Foundation.
