Pankraz Fried

Pankraz Fried (born July 12, 1931 in Wabern ; † February 26, 2013 in Heinrichshofen ) was a German historian .

The son of a small peasant family passed his Abitur in 1951 at the grammar school near St. Stephan in Augsburg . From 1952 to 1958 he studied philosophy, classical philology and history at the University of Munich and from 1955 to 1956 folklore with Karl Ilg at the University of Innsbruck . In 1959/60 he did his doctorate in Bavarian regional history with Max Spindler with a groundbreaking thesis on the Dachau and Kranzberg regional courts in the High and Late Middle Ages as well as in the early modern period. Until 1969 he worked as a research assistant for the Commission for Bavarian State History . He was mainly responsible for the Historical Atlas of Bavaria . From 1969 to 1971 Fried was a research assistant to Wolfgang Zorn at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the University of Munich. Fried was a conservator at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation from 1972 to 1974 . At the University of Regensburg the habilitation took place in 1972 with a thesis from the Bavarian agricultural history of the 19th century. From 1974/79 to 1993/94 Fried was the first professor to teach Bavarian and Swabian regional history at the University of Augsburg . Since 1977 he has been a member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . From 1980 to 2000 he was first chairman of the Swabian Research Foundation at the Commission for Bavarian State History.

Fried's focus was on rural social, agricultural and village history as well as economic, social and cultural history. Fried paid particular attention to the smaller structures ( micro-history ). For his research, Fried was awarded the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in Silver (1996), the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon (1996), the Swabian Merit Medal , the Willi Mauthe Prize of the Heimat- und Museumsverein in Weilheim and the Culture Prize of the Bavarian State Foundation (2011 ) honored. Fried were dedicated to commemorative publications on his 60th, 65th, 70th, 75th and 80th birthday.
