The Augsburg city archive is a municipal archive that is dedicated to the city history of Augsburg . It is used to manage and store official documents and writings, the origins of which go back to the 11th century. The archive material comprises around 12,000 running meters of shelf and is for the most part made accessible by finding aids. In addition to municipal and non-municipal archives, extensive photo collections can also be viewed there. Archive director Michael Cramer-Fürtig is responsible for managing the archive, which has been located in a redesigned industrial building on the site of the former Augsburg worsted spinning mill in the direct vicinity of the State Textile and Industry Museum since 2016 . Since he has been on sick leave, the city archive has been temporarily headed by Kerstin Lengger.

history

In the 16th century, important documents of the imperial city began to be systematically collected and administered. This step was occasionally promoted by the Augsburg city clerk Konrad Peutinger . At this point in time, the archive was still in the town hall; it was not until 1885 that it was given its own official building, in which all the stocks were brought together. Frieda Forster (1819–1902), daughter of the machine manufacturer Ludwig Sander , rented her parents' house, built by Augsburg architect Max Treu , at Fuggerstrasse 12 ( location ) to the city. In 1902, the neo-Renaissance building was donated to the city.

During the Second World War , the stocks were relocated and brought back until 1957. In the decades that followed, the archival holdings continued to grow through the inclusion of private collections and archives from incorporated neighboring communities. In addition to the lack of space, the unsuitable storage conditions also turned out to be increasingly problematic. In 2003 the city therefore decided to move the archive to the site of the former Augsburg worsted spinning mill . After several years of renovation of a listed industrial building and subsequent relocation of the archive holdings, the new city archive opened in summer 2016. The total capacity of the new magazine is around 26,000 meters of shelf space .

Archives holdings

The old holdings contain the former imperial city archive with the exception of the legally relevant documentation, which had to be handed over to the Munich imperial archive when it was incorporated into Bavaria in 1806. 1251 documents and around 20 linear meters of official books and files are in the Augsburg State Archives . The oldest surviving original document dates from 1046 and relates to the donation of two serfs to Augsburg Cathedral, the oldest German-language document in the archive was issued in 1273. The literals of the council correspondence begin in 1290, the council minutes in 1392, the citizens' records in 1288, the oldest tax books come from the years 1346, 1351 and 1355, the oldest register of men requiring arms was created in 1610. The records of the wedding office start in 1563. In 1302 the book of eight was created, the files of the city bailiff and the imperial bailiff of Swabia begin in 1305.

The newer holdings include files from the municipal offices as well as various bequests from individual private individuals, families, associations and companies. These include the estates of Raimund von Doblhoff , Karl Albert Gollwitzer , Eugen Nerdinger as well as the company archives of the mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mill in Augsburg and the Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik .

In addition to the files and official registers, there are around 10,000 documents, 40,000 historical maps, 350,000 photo negatives and 20,000 posters in the archive. The archive also has a specialist library with around 35,000 books and around 500 linear meters of files on civil status and registration.
