Ludwig Sander

Ludwig Sander (born July 3, 1790 in Kreuznach ; † October 26, 1877 in Augsburg ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the Sander'schen machine factory in Augsburg, one of the oldest predecessor companies of today's MAN AG.

Life

Sander settled in Augsburg in 1812 to take over the management of a tobacco factory that belonged to his uncle Carl von Lotzbeck . The factory employed around 100 people and was one of the largest of its kind in Bavaria. The profits from the tobacco business enabled Sander to participate in a number of other companies in Augsburg, so that he was soon one of the most influential industrialists in the city. Since 1818 he was a member of the city council and was at times even considered a candidate for the office of Bavarian Minister of Commerce.

Sander's machine factory

In 1840, together with the engineer Jean Gaspard Dollfus, he founded the Sander'sche Maschinenfabrik , which initially concentrated on the construction of machines for the local textile industry , including the mechanical cotton spinning and weaving mill in Augsburg . In 1844, instead of Dollfus, Sander brought printing machine pioneer Carl August Reichenbach and entrepreneur Carl Buz into the company, who expanded their product range to include the construction of printing and steam machines .

In 1855, Sander sold the factory to Reichenbach and Buz for reasons of age, which it initially continued as C. Reichenbachsche Maschinen-Fabrik , two years later it was converted into a stock corporation and finally in 1898 with the Nuremberg-based machine factory Klett & Comp. merged to form Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg (MAN).

The former MAN subsidiary manroland still produces printing machines at the Augsburg site.

Foundation, endowment

After Sander's death, his heirs founded the Sander Foundation in 1880 , which to this day supports Augsburg residents in need by running old people's homes and providing affordable housing.
