The company initially manufactured steam engines and from 1844 cast parts for a state-owned Bavarian wagon construction company. In 1847 the company's founder, Johann Friedrich Klett, died . The company was taken over by the publisher Theodor Cramer , who married Klett's daughter.

On February 28, 1851, the first vehicle to be delivered was a freight car . Together with Johann Ludwig Werder ( Werder-Gewehr M / 1869 ) the company grew massively under Cramer-Klett and from then on also manufactured bridges and high-rise railway structures (e.g. Munich Glass Palace ). The company covered the increased capital requirements through intensive cooperation with the Darmstädter Bank for Trade and Industry .

In 1865 the first of numerous changes of name took place, then in Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Nürnberg, Klett & Co. , in 1873 in Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft Nürnberg . In 1898 this company merged with Maschinenfabrik Augsburg to form the Vereinigte Maschinenfabrik Augsburg und Maschinenbauges. Nürnberg AG together. From 1908 to 1986 it was a division of MAN.

In 1986 the rail transport technology division of the Augsburg Nürnberg AG machine factory was outsourced to MAN Gutehoffnungshütte Eisenbahnverkehrstechnik AG , which was sold to AEG in 1990 .
