Johann Friedrich Klett (born February 9, 1778 in Zella St. Blasii ; † 1847 in Nuremberg ) was a German technician and entrepreneur, founder of several companies in Nuremberg.

Life

After 1805 Klett opened a manufactured goods store in connection with the sale of Nuremberg toys, later he sold Spiegel for a while, traded in hops and participated in all kinds of financial transactions. In 1833 he took part in a worsted spinning mill, which he soon closed. In the buildings of this spinning mill he opened a machine factory in 1838, which was later joined by the Englishmen James Edward Earnshaw from Dundee , John Hooker from Canterbury and Wharton Rye from Manchester . With these, Klett founded under the name "Klett & Co." a factory company. The company mainly dealt with the construction of steam boilers and steam engines. The first steam engine that was built according to Earnshaw's design for his own company was a so-called column machine with 10 hp.

In 1841 he began with the manufacture of railway accessories (based on the construction of the first German railway line from Nuremberg to Fürth in 1835), steam engines and other industrial equipment. After his death in 1847, his son-in-law Theodor von Cramer-Klett took over the company, which later became the Augsburg-Nürnberg MAN machine factory.

Regarding the financial participation, Bösch states that Klett deposited more than 10,000 fl ( guilders ), while the English deposited smaller sums. From Earnshaw only 100 fl are given, while he himself wrote later (in his settlement request from 1845) that he had contributed 2,000 fl.
