history
After the secularization and mediatization of smaller territories by the Electorate of Bavaria, there were initially three archive authorities for the Swabian areas: the Dillingen archive conservatory (emerged from the archives of the Augsburg monastery ), the Kempten depot registry (based on the archives of the Kempten monastery ) and the Neuburg archive conservatory ( went back to the archives of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg ). In 1830 the holdings of the three institutions were merged in Neuburg, where the archive was located in the castle there until 1989. The name of the authority changed several times:
- 1830: District depot registry Neuburg
- 1837: Archive Conservatory in Neuburg
- 1876: District Archives Neuburg
- 1921: Bavarian State Archives Neuburg
- 1970: State Archives Neuburg
In 1989 the State Archives were relocated to Augsburg in a new building in the Augsburg university quarter; Since then the name has been State Archives Augsburg. A magazine extension was completed in 2016.
