State archives (or state archives ) are state archives .

Germany

In Germany , state archives are the archives of a federal state. Them is by law the task assigned, the archive means documents ( documents , files , maps , digital data, etc.) the authorities their area of responsibility ( archive Sprengel ) to archive scientific principles by archivists to develop and permanently retained. At the level of the subordinate authorities, there are also state archives that open up and preserve the archive material created there .

Each federal state has its own archive organization. In some countries there is a so-called main state archive, in others a so-called country (main) archive. For example, the Baden General State Archives in Karlsruhe with this name continue to exist as one of the state archives in Baden-Württemberg . Smaller federal states only have one state archive, while larger ones traditionally have several.

In recent years, however, there has been a tendency to combine all state archives of a federal state into one institution (with several locations). Saxony-Anhalt was the first to merge the three state archives into one state main archive , which has the three specialist departments Magdeburg (with the location Wernigerode ), Merseburg and Dessau . North Rhine-Westphalia followed this example in 2004, followed by the Free State of Saxony , Lower Saxony and Baden-Württemberg in 2005 . In 2006, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania went one step further and integrated the two previously independent state archives - State Archives Schwerin and State Archives Greifswald - as the State Archives Department into the newly created State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation .
