The Federal Archives Act specifies in Germany specify how the archives of the Federal by the Federal Archives to secure the long term, to harness and exploit scientific.
The protection period for archived material is generally 30 years ( Section 11, Paragraph 1). If the archive material affects natural persons, the protection period ends at the earliest ten years after death, possibly 100 years after birth or 60 years after the documents were created (Section 11 (2)). If documents are subject to confidentiality, the protection period is 60 years (Section 11, Paragraph 3). Exceptions to the protection period apply to persons of contemporary history and can be shortened by the Federal Archives under certain circumstances (e.g. if consent is given) ( Section 12 (2)).
