Surname

Until 1974 there was no community with the name Mandelbachtal. It is named after the valley of the same name in the Mandelbach , in which four of the eight municipal districts, namely Erfweiler-Ehlingen , Wittersheim , Bebelsheim and Habkirchen are located. From the upper reaches to the mouth of the Mandelbach there are still numerous pollarded willows , also known as osier. In earlier centuries, baskets, which are indispensable for rural agriculture, were woven from the branches of these polluted willows. Since its leaves were similar to those of the almond tree , the tree was also popularly called the almond tree. The stream flowing past was called the Mandelbach. Shortly before the confluence with the Blies there was also a place called Mandelbach (first mentioned in 1239), which is now part of the village of Habkirchen. In 1974, as part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland, the new community created from eight originally independent communities was given the name Mandelbachtal.

history

Numerous finds from the Celtic period, for example the splendid jewelery brooch from Wittersheim (today in the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, Saarbrücken ), point to a settlement in pre-Christian times. The Romans came and with them an enormous cultural and economic boom. Remnants of the wall occasionally come to light during construction work, for example in the area of the Erfweiler-Ehlingen church. Coins and shards from Terra Sigillata were found.

In the 3rd century AD, the Gallo-Roman population experienced difficult times. Germanic tribes invaded, burned everything down, and finally took possession of the land in the course of the next three centuries. New forms of life and settlement spread. The Heim- und Ingenorte (5th to 8th centuries) emerged. Christianity, brought with them by Roman settlers and legionaries, was temporarily lost. Then the monastery founder Pirminius came from the island of Reichenau via Alsace to Hornbach and founded his last monastery there, in which he was buried.

From here the monks of St. Benedict did missionary work in Bliesgau. The good soils allowed productive agriculture. Disputes between the different owners, such as B. Bliesgaugrafen and the Gräfinthal monastery emerged and lasted for many centuries.

The area of today's municipality of Mandelbachtal fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 and belonged to the Zweibrücken regional commissioner . After the First World War, as part of the Versailles Treaty, the Saar area and with it the area of the municipality of Mandelbachal was separated from the German Empire and placed under a League of Nations mandate in 1920 . After the Second World War, the area became part of the Saarland and with it came to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957.

As part of the regional and district reform of Saarland , the new municipality of Mandelbachtal was created on January 1, 1974 from the eight formerly independent municipalities of Bebelsheim, Blieshaben-Bolchen, Erfweiler-Ehlingen, Habkirchen, Heckendalheim, Ommersheim, Ormesheim and Wittersheim.

religion

Mandelbachtal is mostly Roman Catholic. The Catholic Christians belong to the two parish communities newly formed in 2015, St. Jakobus Mandelbachtal (with the formerly independent Catholic churches Bebelsheim ( St. Margaretha ), Blieshaben-Bolchen (St. Paulus), Erfweiler-Ehlingen ( St. Mauritius ), Habkirchen ( St. Martin ), Ormesheim ( St. Mauritius ) and Wittersheim ( St. Remigius )) and parish community Veronika Ensheim (with Heckendalheim ( St. Josef ), Ommersheim ( Mariä Visitation ) and the Catholic churches in Ensheim (St. Peter) and Eschringen (St. Laurentius)).

The Protestant Christians in the Mandelbachtal belong to the Protestant parish Ensheim-Eschringen-Mandelbachtal, which also has a church (Kreuzkirche) in Ormesheim .
