Location of the community of Gersheim in the Saarpfalz district | ||
Gersheim (in the local dialect Gerschum ) is a municipality in the Saarland in Germany . It is located about 20 km south of Homburg and 25 km southeast of the state capital Saarbrücken .
geography
location
Gersheim is located in the Bliesgau , the southern part of the Saarpfalz district . It borders on the French department of Moselle for a length of 13 km , as well as on the municipality of Mandelbachtal and the town of Blieskastel . Gersheim lies in the Bliesgau loop of the Saarland circular hiking trail . The Blies flows through the village .
climate
The annual precipitation is 905 mm and is thus in the upper third of the values recorded by the measuring points of the German Weather Service . Over 78% indicate lower values. The driest month is April; it rains most in May. In the wettest month there is around 1.5 times more rain than in the driest month. The seasonal fluctuations in precipitation are in the lower third. In only 22% of all places, the monthly precipitation fluctuates less. |
Districts
The community consists of nine districts: Bliesdalheim , Gersheim, Herbitzheim , Medelsheim , Niedergailbach , Peppenkum , Reinheim , Rubenheim and Walsheim . The village of Seyweiler belongs to the district Medelsheim, the place Utweiler belongs to Peppenkum .
history
Historical evidence of bygone eras can be found on community soil, especially in the European Culture Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim , where excavations from the Celtic and Roman times can be viewed. The Celtic princess grave found in 1954 is particularly interesting. The grave mound of the princess and two others have been reconstructed to be accessible.
A Merovingian cemetery under Walsheimer Straße and the ending - heim speak for a foundation in the early Middle Ages (6th / 7th centuries). The place was first mentioned in 1150 as Geroldesheim .
As of 1798, like all areas on the left bank of the Rhine , it belonged to France . Due to the resolutions at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the village was a Bavarian municipality from 1816 .
Between the 18th century and 1914 there was a small Jewish community in Gersheim. In 1889/90 a synagogue was built in Ludwigstrasse. After the community was dissolved, it was converted into a residential building in 1919. The building is now on the Saarland's list of monuments.
According to the Versailles Treaty , the Saar area was under French administration from 1920 to 1935, following a mandate from the League of Nations .
After the Saar referendum , the Saar area was annexed to the National Socialist German Reich in 1935 . On September 1, 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War , the village was evacuated. A second evacuation followed in December 1944. In 1939 and 1945 the place suffered severe destruction. As a result, the place largely lost its original character as a farming village.
From 1946 to 1957, Saarland was a partially sovereign state under a French protectorate. After the referendum of 1955, it joined the Federal Republic of Germany .
With the reorganization of the districts and communities in Saarland , Gersheim, which previously belonged to the district of Sankt Ingbert , became a community of the Saarpfalz district on January 1, 1974.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1974, the previously independent communities of Bliesdalheim, Herbitzheim, Medelsheim, Niedergailbach, Peppenkum, Reinheim, Rubenheim, Seyweiler, Utweiler and Walsheim were incorporated.

In Bliesdalheim, the SPD won the majority of the votes. She is entitled to 5 seats. However, only 3 people were noted on the SPD lists. Therefore the 2 missing seats remain vacant.

nature and landscape
Most of the area is covered with shell limestone . To the northwest of the village is a large orchid area , which is home to over half of the orchid species documented in Germany.
Due to the high groundwater level and regular flooding, the Bliesaue is an important habitat for many animal and plant species. The banks of the Blies are bordered by black poplars , willows and sometimes black alder forests . After being released into the wild, the beaver has been at home again for several years .
Probably nothing is more characteristic of the Bliesgau than its orchard meadows that characterize the valley slopes next to isolated arable land.
In the deciduous forests on the ridges, beech and common oak dominate .
Museums
The district of Reinheim gained national fame through the discovery of a princess grave from the early La Tène period (around 400 BC) in 1954. After the discovery (1987) of a stately palace villa from Roman times (1st – 4th centuries AD) and a small Roman town vicus (1st – 5th century AD) in neighboring Bliesbruck (1971), an archeology park was founded in 1989 under the name of European Culture Park Bliesbruck-Reinheim .
The private museum documents the living conditions of "little people" of the Saar-Palatinate-Lorraine rural population. It has a collection of over 50,000 individual objects. The museum in the Rubenheim district is open every third Sunday of the month from 2pm to 6pm.
Ecological school camp
In Gersheim, Spohn's house was developed into an ecological education center with a school camp. In an old farmhouse and a former school building opposite, Spohns Haus offers accommodation, supply and training opportunities for around 80 visitors. Spohns Haus has the status of a registered association (eV). The main focus of his eco-pedagogical offer is the area of education for sustainable development (ESD).
