history
Peppenkum was first mentioned in a document in 1308 when the Hornbach monastery bought goods in "Boppenkeim". The territorial affiliation always followed Medelsheim , the former official seat.
After the French period (1794 to 1814), Peppenkum came to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 due to the resolutions at the Congress of Vienna (1815) . Under the Bavarian administration, the municipality was assigned to the mayor's office in Medelsheim and the canton of Neuhornbach in the Zweibrücken regional commissioner .
As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Peppenkum was assigned to the municipality of Gersheim on January 1, 1974.
politics
The districts of Peppenkum and Utweiler together form a municipality. Of the nine seats in the local council, six belong to the CDU and three to the SPD . Mayor is Wolfgang Mann (CDU).
(Status: municipal elections 2009)
regional customs
An old local custom is the “Brother Konrad Ride” that takes place on Whit Monday . It is named after the patron saint of the neighboring town of Utweiler , Konrad von Parzham , and goes back to a "horse procession" that originally led to the pilgrimage site of Blieskastel every year . In 1935 this was banned. Since 1936 the “Brother Konrad Ride” has been carried out instead, which leads from Medelsheim via Peppenkum to Utweiler.
