Seyweiler is a district of Gersheim in the Saar- Palatinate district . Until the end of 1973, Seyweiler was an independent municipality in the Homburg district .

location

Seyweiler is located in the Parr countryside , in the south of the Bliesgau . The district covers 350 hectares. The Parr not only includes Seyweiler and Medelsheim, but also Peppenkum, Utweiler and Riesweiler. These places have always been closely connected with each other, especially through the Catholic Church of St. Martin in Medelsheim.

history

Between 600 and 800, Seyweiler was built a "hamlet" here by Frankish settlers under the clan chief "Sibo". From this the current name developed - Seyweiler.

The first written mention of Seyweiler was in 1307, when the couple Reyner and Gela, who lived here, established a bequest in favor of the abbot and the Werschweiler monastery. The Seyweiler farmers joined the farmers from the surrounding villages in 1525 and were involved in the peasant uprising. The Seyweiler citizens were just like the Medelsheim and Peppenkum subjects of the same rulers, such as the Count of Zweibrücken, the House of Austria, the Fugger of Augsburg and the Count of der Leyen.

Seyweiler belonged to the place Medelsheim , the former official seat of the Parr. In 1816 territorial affiliation with the Palatinate to the Kingdom of Bavaria was awarded. This is still evident today through the Bavarian way of life of the Parr.

In the Second World War in 1939/40 and 1944/45 Seyweiler had a hard fight. At that time, Seyweiler was in the " Red Zone " because Seyweiler is very close to the French border. As a result, the residents had to be evacuated twice. At the end of the Second World War , the village was almost 80% destroyed, so that the building structure was irretrievably completely destroyed.

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Seyweiler was assigned to the then newly formed municipality of Gersheim on January 1, 1974.

politics

The districts of Seyweiler and Medelsheim together form a municipality that is represented by a local council.

economy

The former farming village still has two full-time businesses that are run on Aussiedlerhöfe. The local pottery sells its products far beyond the region. A large apiary should also be mentioned.

Culture and sights

Numerous partly artistic crosses (Lorraine crosses) in the area. A fire station, an adjoining small playground, the converted former "Milchheisje" and a cemetery belong to the village.

Leisure and Tourism

Seyweiler is located on the Saarland circular hiking trail , which offers a wide view of the Palatinate and the Vosges . In the district it runs in parts on the historic Dusser Strasse , the salt route from the Lorraine saltworks area around Dieuze .
