Herbitzheim (in the local dialect Herwetzum ) is a district of the municipality of Gersheim in the Saarpfalz district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973 Herbitzheim was an independent municipality in the district of Sankt Ingbert .

geography

Herbitzheim is located in the southeast of Saarland in the middle of the Bliesgau biosphere reserve , only a few kilometers from the German-French border. The Blies flows through the village . The district of the village borders on the districts of Gersheim , Bliesdalheim , Rubenheim and Walsheim .

history

Two Merovingian graves in Rubenheimer Strasse (corridor "Auf dem Gries"), which are likely to be the first cemetery in the village, and the ending - heim, suggest that it was founded in the early Middle Ages (6th / 7th centuries). It was first mentioned in a document in 1382. At that time Herbitzheym , derived from the old German nickname Herobod, was referred to as the property of the Lords of Kirkel .

As of 1798, like all areas on the left bank of the Rhine , it belonged to France . Due to the resolutions at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the village was a Bavarian municipality from 1816 . From 1879 the place was connected to the railway network of the Bliestalbahn .

According to the Versailles Treaty , the Saar area was under the administration of a government commission of the League of Nations from 1920 to 1935 with significant French influence.

After the Saar referendum, the Saar area was annexed to the National Socialist German Reich in 1935 . On September 1, 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War , the village was evacuated. A second evacuation followed in December 1944. In 1939 and 1945 the place suffered severe destruction. As a result, the place largely lost its original character as a farming village.

From 1946 to 1957 the Saarland was an autonomous state with economic ties and under strong political influence from France. After the referendum of 1955, it joined the Federal Republic of Germany .

Since the regional and administrative restructuring , which came into force on February 1, 1974, the formerly independent municipality of Herbitzheim has belonged to the municipality of Gersheim. Today most of the residents are commuters to the surrounding cities.

coat of arms

The blazon reads: “Half-split and divided: above right in gold a four-spoke red mill wheel, above left in red a golden ammonite, below in blue a silver wavy bar, covered with three fan-shaped golden orchids of the male orchid growing from a stick that is leafed together ( Orchis mascula ) ".

The coat of arms refers to the historical, economic and landscape features of the Herbitzheim district. The mill wheel is reminiscent of the three earlier mills in the local area, which are often mentioned in old documents and were important for Herbitzheim. The ammonite stands on the one hand for the modern St. Barbara Church, whose floor plan was developed from the shape of a sea shell according to the plans of the architect, and on the other hand for the location of the district in the Muschelkalk area. The orchid also stands for the scenic location in the Muschelkalk area with its diverse orchid vegetation. Finally, the wave bar indicates the geographical location of Herbitzheim in the valley on both sides of the Blies.

nature and landscape

Most of the area is covered with shell limestone . Due to the high groundwater level and regular flooding, the Bliesaue is an important habitat for many animal and plant species. The banks of the Blies are bordered by black poplars , willows and sometimes black alder forests . After being released into the wild, the beaver has been at home again for several years .

Probably nothing is more characteristic of the Bliesgau than its orchard meadows that characterize the valley slopes next to isolated arable land.

In the deciduous forest on the ridge east of the village, beeches and common oaks dominate .

Attractions

  • Catholic Church “St. Barbara "(1974). It is a branch church of St. Mauritius in Rubenheim . The construction of the church was made possible after a church building association founded in 1927 with the aim of building its own church in Herbitzheim, had equity of almost DM 300,000 available through donations at the beginning of the 1970s.

The inventory of the church includes a statue of the Madonna from the 16th century, which comes from Switzerland . The statue of St. Barbara , to whom the church is consecrated, was made in 1976 by master wood sculptor Richard Rottmann. The interior is completed by colored concrete glass windows with biblical motifs and concrete reliefs inserted into the room by Emil Wachter from Karlsruhe .
