history

The municipality of Kirkel was created on the occasion of the regional reform on January 1, 1974 from the previously independent municipalities of Kirkel-Neuhäusel , Limbach bei Homburg and Altstadt . A sub-area of Kirkel-Neuhäusel with more than 400 inhabitants at that time ( Eschweilerhof ) was reclassified to Neunkirchen / Saar .

The Bayerisch Kohlhof housing estate , which belonged to the Limbach near Homburg community, was also awarded to the city of Neunkirchen / Saar on January 1, 1975. The new community of Kirkel and the former communities of Kirkel-Neuhäusel and Limbach had lodged a constitutional complaint with the Constitutional Court of Saarland against this assignment and the assignment of the Eschweilerhof. However, this was rejected by the judgment of November 17, 1975. After the Saarland government announced in 1979 that it wanted to re-examine the disputed restructuring measures, the municipality of Kirkel made major efforts in February 1980 to regain the ceded areas. The city of Neunkirchen was not ready to negotiate. On May 10, 1983, the Saarland government issued an ordinance to reclassify the inhabited parts of the Bavarian Kohlhof to the community of Kirkel. The city of Neunkirchen took legal action against it and was ruled on January 30, 1984; because the Constitutional Court upheld the claim. Thus, the disputed area remained with Neunkirchen. Finally, the Saarland Landtag passed a law on January 23, 1985, with which the inhabited parts of the Bayerischer Kohlhof settlement were finally assigned to the community of Kirkel with effect from April 1, 1985. The area came to the district Limbach.

The districts have a much longer history. There are traces of Roman settlement. The Burg Kirkel was first mentioned in documents in the year 1075th The Hollerburg , which presumably dates from the 9th century, already existed in today's Hollerlöchern .

The village of Kirkel-Neuhäusel was built in the late Middle Ages at the foot of the castle hill. Limbach was first mentioned in 1219. The old town is the original Limbach. In the 13th century, the center shifted, so that the old place ( old site ) remained.

  • The Kühnbruch is designated as a nature reserve ; the former nature reserve Hell digging in old town is now part of the landscape conservation area Beeder break . Both wetlands are especially habitats for rare bird species such as snipe, marsh harrier, whinchat and water rail. The white stork, which was a regular breeding bird in this section of the Bliestal until the 1960s, can be observed all year round as a food visitor.
  • The area of the former customs station , located in the districts of Altstadt and Homburg, is designated as a "priority area for nature conservation". Extremely dry and hot, it is particularly important for reptiles. A large population of the wall lizard can be found here . • The Kirkeler Felsenpfad is part of a 7 km long circular hiking trail in the Kirkeler Wald (forest behind the castle hill). The legendary unlucky rock and the Hollerkanzel are striking examples of the fascinating stone formations that can be found in the Kirkeler Forest. The Frauenbrunnen is also located on the rock path. On the right of the fountain you can see a passage. According to the vernacular, this should be the end of an underground escape tunnel from the Wörschweiler monastery . However, geographically speaking, this is not possible. On the rocks behind the fountain you can see a woman's head, around which mysterious stories entwine.
  • The geological nature trail can be reached on the same circular hiking trail as the Kirkeler Felsenpfad and the Frauenbrunnen.
  • The silver sand spring is an artesian spring in the forest between Kirkel-Neuhäusel and Furpach. The silver sand from which the water is pressed is characteristic.
